Hi Dave - not sure if this regression bug has resurfaced - http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-8326 - but you referred to it here  - http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,20386.msg85454.html#msg85454

The description on that thread seems to match this usage. The profile has been in use for years.

It is a sign up form with only First, Last, Email and Postcode. It fires out a 'confirmation' email.

Now Anon are getting

Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.
The requested Profile (gid=) is disabled, OR there is no Profile with that ID, OR a valid 'gid=' integer value is missing from the URL. Contact the site administrator if you need assistance.

So the gid id is not listed in the error. and the url is /civicrm/profile/create. Occurs in Chrome.

Any suggestions?

can u check if there is a user record for anon users (i.e. uid = 0)

seems like anon might not be getting a session

Just realised this is the same Profile that caused us to flag this issue
