mailing to a smart group sends email to people without email addresses

Forgive me if this has been addressed before.  I didn't find anything in the searches.

I have a smart group based upon membership.  I've checked the mailing list box.  Some of the people don't have email addresses yet civimail tries to send a message to a null address.   This then bounces and the people are marked on hold (not that you see that on person's record but it's that way in the db).  I don't understand why the mail processing doesn't skip null addresses.  Yes, I can create yet another smart group the contains only the people from the original smart group that have email addresses but a bit of work for all the different groups I send email to.

I suppose in the grand scale of things this isn't that big a deal.  Really it just makes the bounced message report misstated.  The on hold fixes itself if you ever add an email address.

I'm using 3.2.4.  I'm sorry I'm not sure if it's still an issue with the current release.  Sort of hard to run this test on demo.

I dont remember this being a bug in any version. To send an email, we store the email_id in the mailing tables. So its fairly hard for us to send an email without an email record

You can try it on demo, since in more recent versions, we give the number of recipients that will get the mailing. A good feature addition would be the ability to click on those recipients and see who are the folks involved and what email address will the mail be sent to (and the possibility of adding / removing some members from that list)

In looking at this further I think there may be bad data in our database.  I created a test smart group of all the people with null email addresses and then tried to do a mailing to them.  In theory, it should not want to send email to anyone but it finds about 10% to send to.  In looking at the data, I see that the civicrm_email table has that many rows in it with null email addresses.  I'm not really sure how it could get a null address but probably through some sort of import.

I assume there should be no rows in the civicrm_email table that would have null email.  So I should delete these rows.  Right?

not sure how you have null or empty email addresses. That should not happen :(

alsoo filed and fixed for 4.1:

http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-9044

in case this does happen :)
