Internal Server Error (500) on contribution pages - Joomla 1.7
October 16, 2011, 03:29:02 pm
Hello. I'm new to CiviCRM, but not to Joomla. I have a fresh 4.0.5 install (now updated to .6) that is working in the back end, but when accessing contribution pages via the site menu I get 500 errors.

I recently renamed the database due to problems resulting from it having a hyphen in it. This resulted in the back end breaking, but I was able to correct the settings in civicrm.settings.php for the site and for the back end. The files match except for BASEURL and SITE_KEY.

Is there anywhere else that the database name would need to be updated? I've worked through some of the "new server" Wiki page trying to troubleshoot. That led me to delete some cache files and check some configuration settings in the back end.

Thanks in advance.

for joomla, there are two instances of the civicrm.settings.php file -- one for the frontend, one for the backend.
make sure: /components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php
has been updated (along with the one in the administrator folder, which it sounds like you already updated)

Thank you. I tried to indicate that I've already changed both files, and that they're almost identical.

I ran the 4.0.7 update this morning, and then I ran the database update utility. Both completed successfully, so obviously the database is connecting. I'm really in a tough spot here. Any further help would be appreciated.

UPDATE: I've found that if I access the page by its actual URL rather than through the Joomla menu, I can see the page. For example, /index.php?option=com_civicrm&view=Contributions works, while /join-and-donate/become-a-member does not. That said, I don't actually get any CiviCRM content on the page--just the page wrapper (header, footer, menu, etc.).

Also, I have 3 contribution pages set up in the Civi backend, and the URL for each is the same as my example above. Should they be unique somehow?

try creating fresh menu items for the contrib pages (i.e. create new instead of editing existing).
joomla stores params in a single field, and doesn't always clean out old param options when a component defines different params in newer versions. in other words -- it's possible your menu item has some deprecated param values still in the db.

re: anti-spam --
i think those go away once you've reached a certain number of posts -- as the system recognizes that you've built legit reputation. i don't have any anti-spam checks when i post.

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately I've tried that.

Anti-spam seems to have gone away after 3 posts. I just deleted my complaint a minute ago. :-)

Update: The others on my dev team did some more work on the Contribution pages and they've started working. It seems that if configuration isn't complete, the page simply doesn't load. It completely breaks Joomla somehow.

Unfortunately I don't have much more information to offer than that.

You mention that the "Site Key" isn't the same in the front and backend config files. Why not? I believe it should be, from memory.

Ed

PS. Yes, you can break a contribution page if the payment processor/payment options aren't set up right. I've done it myself as part of my ongoing project to mess up every feature of CiviCRM by trial and error!

I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough to answer that, Ed. I'm curious, though.

Did you ever get this figured out?  We are running Joomla 2.5 and the latest of CiviCRM.  Any link to create a campaign page fails with 500 server errors.

This particular problem hasn't popped up again, though we do get process-page timeouts that have us a little frustrated at times.

Take a look at http://www.msugranfondo.com/2013/

How can we go about determining the issue?
