Smarty failure line 270 in install process

CiviCRM4.07 Drupal 7.8 new install of both running on shared hosting

Clicked on Configuration Checklist on Install page and got:

Fatal error: preg_replace() [<a href='function.preg-replace'>function.preg-replace</a>]: Failed evaluating code: '{php' . str_repeat(&quot; &quot;, substr_count('{* Check for Status message for the page (stored in session-&gt;getStatus). Status is cleared on retrieval. *}', &quot; &quot;)) .'}' in /home/nynjtcs/public_html/gs.dev.nynjtc.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/packages/Smarty/Smarty_Compiler.class.php on line 270

It is not the PCRE problem posted recently as Unicode is fully  supported.   (passes pcretest -C)
