I am running CiviCRM in Joomla.  The site has been running fine for 3 months.  There have been no changes or upgrades on the site made for over a month.

Today, I am getting the following error if I try to search for contacts, open event manager or any other action that requires a call to the database from within CiviCRM:

Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.
DB Error: unknown error
> Error Details (are blank)
Return to home page.

There is absolutely no detail provided on why the system cannot access the database.  I am able to log into the database and query the tables successfully in phpmyadmin.

System versions:
PHP:       5.2.11
Database:    5.0.77
Joomla:         Joomla! 1.6.1 Stable [ Onward ] 07-Mar-2011 23:00 GMT
CiviCRM:   4.0.4

I have checked log files on the server and the civicrm_log table and there is no information pertaining to this issue.

Does anyone know how to diagnose and fix this issue?

nothing has changed.  I have a test version of the website running using the same configuration and it is running fine.  The hosting service is Webfaction.  The site in question has been in production and deployed for over 2 month with no changes made other than adding data.
