Settings for merging when someone renews their membership

I am a novice when it comes to much of civiCRM.

I am having an issue of when people renew their membership the system is creating a new profile.  Where do I find the setting to make sure that just the emails have to match so it merges them?

HI - look under Contact in your Admin Menu and there is an option for Find and Merge Duplicates - /civicrm/contact/deduperules?reset=1
Then you can add a Strict Rule for Individuals for Email Only.
And p.s. in terms of civicrm terminology, to avoid confusion, the word 'profile' is used for a something else so
Quote
when people renew their membership the system is creating a new profile
needs to be understood as 'creating a new contact record'
