Understanding state / province or county

Second post of my civi journey...
UK install of civicrm - localization English (us) Address - English UK.

On a new contact filed label = state / privince with UK counties in the selection list.

Enable the county field - nothing in select list.

some help please....
1) can you rename state / province to county?
2) can you add counties to the list?
3) what is the county field used for?

I did try and find any existing threads on this, but nothing that was clear.

Thanks for any help.

1. rename - yes, use the 'word replacement' feature in one of the admin menu submenus (options).
2. yes, but it's in the database. But - nothing will show up til you've selected the country - try that first.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

The word replacement does not work when I am creating a new contact? I copied and pasted the exact field label?

I have the country selected as UK and I have both State/Province  and the County filed on the profile.... State/Province has all the counties in and there is nothing in the county field???

I also edited the database to add some new counties...it's been a good day (so far)! :)

I look forward to the day to be able to know enough to answer posts on this forum!
