Trigger confirmation email using status?

Is there a way to trigger the confirmation email based on the change of the participants status to 'Registered'?

It depends how you are changing the status. I think for waiting list etc participant is notified if status is changed. Also in offline event registration screen, you can check send email checkbox to email receipt.
