A few months ago I identified that the mailing labels option of 'merge by household' wasn't working.  With Dave Greenberg's encouragement, this was logged as a fault at http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-8338 

We're currently preparing for another large mailing and I've noticed that the fault isn't set to be fixed until 4.2 which seems like an age away given that we're on 4.0.7  We have lots of adults living in large shared houses  - a mix of couples and single people.  With the mailing label 'merge by household' option not working I'm having to creatively tweak numerous addresses so that I can use 'share by address' instead as we need couples to receive one letter between them and single people to receive a letter each.  It's very time-consuming.

As this is a core Civi fault - a function that just isn't working - is there any way of speeding up the fix so that 'merge by household' works for mailing labels... please?
