Is there a standard phone number input format in civiCRM?
For example, when people enter their phone number, what standard format they should follow, (xxx)444-2333, or xxx-xxx-xxxx, or other?

I am asking this question is because I want to know what formats will make the search, data import, or export easier.

Currently no, but we did some modifications for the NYSS which allowed a developer to add rules to ensure this fairly easily.

Kurund promised to do a blog post on this in the near future.

Thanks for your reply, lobo. Did that mean whichever format I use for phone number, there won't be big difference for now? Or is there a best practice?

there is no best practice right now for entering phone numbers.

So your org can choose to implement whatever best practice it feels best (and then you can enforce it via a form rule)

Something that would be useful is to store the numbers only (without formatting) and and do the formatting on display.

The formatting would allow to put the right parenthesis and dash at the right places and/or add a <a href="callme:"> link
