Overlapping External IDs

I am coming from a DB where the Primary Key index started at the same number for both organizations and individuals.  Does the external identifier field distinguish between the two types, so that duplicate values can exist between an org and and an individual?  Say external id of both could be 54 but one refers to the value of 54 only when doing imports related to orgs and the other related to imports of individuals?  Just trying to get a grasp on how I might conquer my import project.

It does not distinguish between the two types. One workaround might be to prefix your external id before import, so you have:

ORG-53 and IND-54

i did the above and it worked quite well when i had a similar situation with overlapping ids :)

Thanks for the idea. Was hoping that it did but I guess it will take a bit more time to import but not too much.
