No recipients when mailing to a smart group based on a related contacts search

We run children's groups and need to email the parents so: 

- Via an Advanced Search I used 'Display results as related contacts' to select the parents of children in a particular group. 
- I put these parents in a new smart group. 
- When I selected the smart group in Civimail it showed Total Recipients as 0. 

Is this because it can't handle related contacts in a smart group?  Or something else?  Is there a way to achieve what I'm after other than running a search each time and updating a 'real' group of parents rather than using a smart group?

Thats a relatively new feature and i suspect it is a bug. Please try to reproduce on our demo machine and if so, please file an issue. If you can get your developer to investigate and file a patch that will help get it into 4.1

I just did a Related Contacts search of the group Summer Program Volunteers on the demo.  It showed 16 people who I then put in a Smart group called Testing Related Contacts Smart Group.  When I chose this group in Civimail it showed 0 recipients so it does look like a bug.

I haven't personally filed an issue before so please can you tell me how to do that, thanks.

PS Strange - On the demo when I tried to use Advanced Search and show results as Related Contacts it didn't give me a Specify Relationship Box to allow me to specify 'parent of'.

We have discovered the same issue and I'm glad someone already posted it! :)

If we have a smart group of organizations that displays results as related contacts using the employee relationship, civimail will ignore the individuals and only select the organizations in the group. This seems to be in smart groups, not just civiMail, but the exact circumstances of where that happens escapes me at the moment.

We'll take a look at it and see if we can figure it out.

The original version displayed the contributions / activities / memberships of the found contacts that matched the search criteria. As such they did not hit this issue

The way it was coded / designed was to act as a filter to the "found contact set" after the search was done. I did not think / anticipate this use case :(

So not sure how easy / hard it will be. If easy we'll fix for 4.1. If not, someone will need to investigate / fund the needed fixes

ptpmark - check out the Issue tracker for more info on this at CRM-9212.  It is now due to be fixed in 4.1 which is good news!

there is now a patch for this on the issue tracker if someone would like to apply it and test it out
