Finding contact that don't have a membership associated to them

How can I do a search that will return those contacts that don't have any kind of membership associated to them ?

May be first create a group of all the contacts with memberships using Advanced Search. Then find all the contacts not in that group using Search Builder.

or step 1 as per above, and use the Custom Search, 'in this group, not in that group'
