New Civi functionality for courses, classes, groups and attendance reporting
November 18, 2011, 04:00:21 am
Does your organisation/client run recurring events eg weekly classes, courses, groups?  If so, they would probably love to have the ability to easily set up and deal with this in Civi, including the ability to easily record and report on attendance.

I blogged about this recently at http://civicrm.org/blogs/lindseym/recurring-events-and-attendance-reporting-core-civi-functions#comment-6270 and started a Wiki page on it yesterday at http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=48398441

Having read the introductions from various UK users I wondered if this be relevant to some of you.  UK users were significant in pushing Gift Aid functionality through.  Could we do the same together for recurring events?

Following discussions with lobo we've established that this functionality could be part of the 4.2 Civi release in March/April 2012... if we can fund it.  The project has been costed at around £8,000.  Can you help us take these next crucial steps?

1. We need to secure seed funding of one third of this cost (£2,640). My organisation will seed fund if I can get 2 or 3 other organisations to share the cost.  As a seed funder you will help to shape this functionality so it's well worth getting involved at this level.  More importantly, I need to secure seed funding BEFORE this can officially become a Make It Happen (MIH) Project which enables others to then part-fund it too.

2. Once we have seed funding others can then contribute as much/little as they can to fund this in full by February.  Lobo said that if we can secure all the funding within 2 months the developments will be part of the 4.2 release.

So, this functionality can really become part of Civi core.  It's within sight, but at this stage seed funding asap is the key.  I do believe that making recurring events and attendance easy to deal with will not only make Civi more functional for many current users, but it will open Civi-use up to many other organisations which run courses, classes and so on.  No more work-arounds or additional modules if it's core to Civi!

I know us Brits don't like to talk about money... but I'd love to talk to any interested parties about exactly that, so please get in touch.  Either comment on this post and/or email me directly on lindsey.mansfield@woodlandschurch.net  Many thanks.
