Memberships by relationship history
November 18, 2011, 05:32:31 am
Currently new institutional memberships automatically take on the history of that school or organization. Can that change so each person within an institutional membership still has their own membership history? For example, just because X institution has been a member since 1975 doesn’t mean Mable Sue who is 24 has been a member longer than she’s been alive.

I think this is an interesting argument. It would be good to hear from others in the community on this.

Hi!

This would be great for us aswell!

My client is constantly finding new things they want to see the history of. I think that in many cases it's possible to create reports that fetches the wanted information from the database.

I can definitely see the benefit of knowing when a particular 'inherited membership' begins. However, the institutional membership's start date (along with the membership duration) determines membership status (including when a membership expires). If inherited memberships acquired their own start dates, then we'd need to make sure the code which maintains membership statuses ignores the inherited membership start dates (it may do that now - not sure).

Question - is a "Membership Signup" activity created when an inherited membership starts? If so, does it's Activity Date reflect the actual beginning date of that membership? If so, that becomes an alternate way of knowing when Mable Sue starting being a member.
