Drupal vs Joomla on Win 7
November 23, 2011, 08:25:41 am
I need some advice. I am by no means an IP pro but I have worked extensively with MS products such as Visual Studio, ASP.NET, VB.NET and MS SQL Server. I have no experience with Linux, PHP, Joomla, Drupal or Apache server. I have been asked to help with a solution for a small NGO and have found CiviCRM. It appears to be perfect for my  needs but I am discovering that there is a lot of overhead with which I am unfamiliar.

I am running Windows 7 and have no idea how to set up Linux on my machine nor do I want to if it can be avoided.  The Drupal installation on Win 7 appears to be beset with many problems (judging from the posts I have found) and MS has a one-step appplication using WebMatrix ()http://www.microsoft.com/web/joomla). However, it also appears that CiviCRM was originally written with Drupal in mind and the Joomla lintegration came later and is not a good one - although I admit that the only references I have found to this are dated.

My questions are these:
1. Is CiviCRM with Joomla a good match?
2. If not, does anyone know how to install Drupal on Win 7?
3. What are the pros and cons of Drupal vs Joomla with CiviCRM?
4.  Would you recommend that I use Apache or would MS SQL Server be just as good
5.  What about MySQL?

Regards,
Penn

Hi. You wrote:

Are you planning to run CiviCRM on your personal machine? I presume you realize that this is web software and wherever it is, it needs to be available to whomever needs to use it via http, which means you need either Apache or IIS. Unless this is quite clear, then I would strongly suggest you consider using a third party host, who specializes in this.

However, to address your questions:

> 1. Is CiviCRM with Joomla a good match?

There may be less integration with Joomla than with Drupal, but many people run Joomla! with CiviCRM just fine. The majority of users (and developers) do prefer Drupal, however.

> 2. If not, does anyone know how to install Drupal on Win 7?

Here you are: http://drupal.org/documentation/install/windows

> 3. What are the pros and cons of Drupal vs Joomla with CiviCRM?

Mostly the level of integration between the CMS and the CRM. Beyond that, Drupal is generally a more powerful yet more complex tool, and Joomla is easier for beginners to use, yet has more limitations. These are very broad statements, however.

> 4.  Would you recommend that I use Apache or would MS SQL Server be just as good

These two packages do not serve the same purpose (at all) so your question is actually illogical.

> 5.  What about MySQL?

MySQL is strongly recommended, yes. PHP is required and then you will need either Apache or IIS. Apache is recommended.

note that civicrm only works with MySQL. Other databases are not supported (and we suspect its a non-trivial project)

I have only ever used drupal once and found it difficult to setup. But since that was my only time I wouldn’t comment any further because I don’t have the experience to back up any other claims. I am a fan of joomla for rapid deployment and for the sites I setup it can work as a long term solution.
