Contact Search Usability

Just chiming in re: the blog post:
http://civicrm.org/node/285

YES -- I definitely agree with the thrust of the post, and find the 2.0 functionality to be improved. I have underused the sidebar search simply because I found the way it filled content to be frustrating at times.

Brian - thx for chiming in. It really helps when folks let us know what aspects of the user experience need tweaking :-)

I've not found a problem with the autocomplete text but then I've only got under 2000 contacts. I suspect for large db it becomes an issue.

From a usability point of view I often have to view the table of found contacts and then click on the contact to view the detail. This adds additional clicks and screen refreshes. An alternative approach presenting two buttons [ Listings ]  [ View Contact ] was discussed here http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,1648.0.html.

Searched the issue tracker for this enhancement and I couldn't find it. Have therefore added it as 2622 http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2622

Hi,

I had a almost working solution on 1.9, but the latest version of dojo doesn't work with it anymore, and I didn't find a way to extract the id of the contact as retrieved by the autocomplete feature.

I didn't investigate more than that (so far, I found dojo rather poor on the doc side), and I've been trying to do too many things on civi lately, but I still think that's a good idea ;)

Adding a "View Contact" (directly) option to the Quick Search is on the issue queue for 2.1:

Just noticed the two buttons as described in the sandbox.

I love it !

I have a suggestion: when you select an item from the drop down list and press enter, it would be great to have view contact as the default, instead of the search.

Many thanks for this, I think I'll backport it to my 2.0

+1 for the "view Contact" button - any chance of sneaking it into 2.0?

I'm afraid it came after the feature freeze.

I can post the patch diff when I have succeeded if you want to, so you can backport it too.

Hi spelo, as requested,

After an intensive 2 seconds successful test, I'm happy to share (haven't done anything on it, beside producing the diff... will it be enough to increase my karma ? ;)
