Joomla Admin user permission controls in civiCRM
December 01, 2011, 07:09:16 am
Hi,

Iam looking for an option in civiCRM, control levels based on admin privileges. Is there any way to control permissions( access levels) based on joomla admins(Super amin, admin, manager).

Explanation:
In joomla admins(Super amin, admin, manager) have different permissions. Like that can we control access to menus in civiCRM based on joomla admin permissions?

Can you explain your usage case?

If you mean can you control front end access levels depending on CiviCRM membership type then the answer is yes using the Joomka CiviCRM authentication plugin.

If you are looking to control access to the backend features then I'm not sure.

You can obviously control which of the backend editors can see the CiviCRM component at all using the normal Joomla backend access controls.

Within CiviCRM you can continue that access control, but there isn't the usual "preferences" button you get in other applications. Go to the Administer>>Administration Console>>(Manage) Access Control. Then you get the ACL options that I assume you are looking for.

Note that civicrm permissions work a lot better with joomla 1.6+ and CiviCRM 4.x

permissioning support is very basic with J 1.5 and prior

Hi,

Thanks for response. I searched for option (Administer>>Administration Console>>(Manage) Access Control) in civicrm joomla component but I didnt find. Iam using J1.5 with civiCRM3.3. How can I get this option?. Do I need to install any plugin?

Sorry, I had assumed you were on J1.6/7 since you were talking about Joomla access controls. Joomla 1.5 doesn't really have access control worth speaking about. That's Joomla's shortcoming, not Civi.

Therefore there is very little access control you can do on CiviCRM - all backend users have access to all components and the CiviCRM access control doesn't work on 1.5. You can do a little bit in the front end with changing menu items and links.

If you need access control upgrade to J1.7 (Civi 4.0 doesn't formally support it, but works fine. Civi 4.1 will, I think, and is just coming into alpha now so I assume will be stable just before/after Christmas).
