Hierarchical Custom Data
December 05, 2011, 01:09:34 pm
Hi,

It seems this has come up more than once, but not yet with an easy answer, and not for awhile, so I'm going to try again.   :)

I have a need to create custom data fields for a contact subtype where the number of selections available will be in the 100s, so I would like to be able to break this out into a parent/child set of fields.  It looks to me like CiviCRM does not have the ability to do this.  Is this in the works?

If I need to do a work-around, is there a way to create what I need in Drupal, and then insert the snippets of my Drupal labor back into CiviCRM?

Any hints on how to start would be much appreciated.

The CiviCRM Webform integration module was built to handle creation of complex input forms and might be perfect for this:

This comes up a few times and would be  great addition to civicrm custom fields. If your org or client could either develop this feature and/or sponsor the feature that would be super-awesome. I suspect its a 40-60 hour project for the first phase (where things are simple but functional!)

Thank you, Dave and Don, for your quick replies.

I will definitely evaluate the Webform Integration solution.

I would love to help contribute a solution to this problem back to the project, but I'm still learning the ropes around here (and Drupal).... but I have high hopes that CiviCRM will provide most of what our organization needs and that I can justify spending the time to come up to speed on the hows-and-whats and start contributing back.

Thanks again!

did you get anywhere with this? we're in the same position and it's stopping us in our tracks. My colloeague's line is "..Even HTML has nested lists!"... and he's right. If you have or are working on it, we may well be able to help/have input.
we're going to try to write a mod to get events to sync with OG's, and heirarchy's are an important part of this...

And html has bold and italic... and blink as well. All nice features that custom data don't have ;)

To my knowledge, no one did put the 40-60 hours budget to make it happen.

How are you planning to use custom data to sync events and OG?

One workaround in your case might be to use tags, that do have a hierarchy.

agreed, would be really nice to have that in civicrm. Would your colleague / you / your org / client be interested in either sponsoring the work and/or submitting a patch to get this into core?

On a tangential but related topic, would be great to make the "custom data" interface pluggable, so other folks can add their own custom data / widget and hence extend what / how custom data does things. Would make things a lot more powerful
