Search on groups returning odd results

Have a client site Joomla 1.5 and Civi 3.2.3

They have an issue with contact searches of groups whereby
Contact Smith was in  group 'A'
He is now no longer in group 'A' but in group 'B'

When a find contacts by group search is done with group criteria 'A', Mr Smith still shows up.

Surely this is wrong?

If so what is wrong and is it fixed in latest versions?
