Memorial/Honoree Creating New Records instead of matching with existing ones.

When I add an honoree or memorial individual to a donor record, it creates a new record for the individual instead of searching for matching ones. This is something I have read in the "PACKT" book on CIVI. It says :
Quote
Unlike most free text searches for contacts in CiviCRM, the In Honor of search field does not find contacts based on their part or complete name, or e-mail address by default. To get around this constraint, you can explicitly include wildcards (%) in what you are searching for. Wherever you put one, it will match any text. For example, %John% will match John Doe as well as well as Jane Johnson.
When I tried it it just created a new contact with percent signs in their name. Any suggestion to avoid duplicates with this or just use the find and merge duplicates command?

Hello general_ludd,

I found the same issue, both on the demo site, and my own installation. I Didn't have the issue with memorials, but the Honoree issue appears to be a bug. I have seen several posts and a couple of reports regarding this, so they are aware of it.

In the mean time, I would suggest using find and merge duplicates. other than creating several duplicate contacts, there don't seem to be any other issues that might affect functionality. I also saw a post where it was recommended that the honoree's email be added in order to keep the duplicate from being created. Here's the link:
