Query re: published CiviCRM book "A Comprehensive Guide"
December 09, 2011, 01:54:31 am
I'm working with a new client, and they wanted some copies of the book "CiviCRM: A Comprehensive Guide". I understand that the printed book, available through lulu.com, is taken from http://www.flossmanuals.net/civicrm/, and printed and shipped to order.

So I ordered 4 copies, including one for myself, and in due course they were produced and shipped to me, arriving perhaps 3 weeks ago. I had previously given my client a copy of the book that I had myself been given by DaveM from Circle Interactive (thanks Dave), copies of which I had seen at CiviCon London (as an aside that reminds me I've not yet received my copy of the book that was promised as part of my participation in the admin/developer training programme that I took part in back in the summer).

Yesterday my client asked me which book she should refer to: the earlier one that I gave her was produced back in the first half of 2011 as far as I am aware - certainly DaveM gave me to understand that it was imminently to be superseded when he gave it to me, and is dated 2011, or one of the copies I've just received from lulu.com, presumably printed to order just a few weeks back, but which state - on page 2: "published May 28 2010".

My client, and I are confused. What's the version control, and how can we tell which is the most recent version of the published book?

Thanks for any light cast.

Great book, by the way, to which I am contributing albeit in a small way at present.

Thanks, Graham

Hey Graham,

Up till now, I thought that the Lulu book was the most up to date.  Flossmanuals has an automatic process for uploading books to Lulu which we have been using (and we did use after the Bourne sprint).  I'll see what has happened and report back here.

The latest (4th) edition has sections on Campaign, Survey and Petition, and no developer section (that is now its own book).  'May 2010' sounds like a second edition (the 3rd edition published in spring 2011 is pretty much the same as the second).

Can you confirm what edition you have?

Part of the confusion is that the early editions didn't say which edition they were.  We've got better at this now and the 4th edition says '4th edition' on the cover.  Might sound pretty basic but we are new to this publishing lark!

We're also using Lulu less and less these days, and haven't been as good at keeping it up to date, which might explain (though not excuse) why your copy is out of date.  These days, ee tend to get a box of 50-100 printed out with a local printer (http://www.imprint.co.uk/) which we distribute at trainings, etc.

I'll make sure that the Lulu copy is up to date and that it clearly says what edition it is and when it was published.

Regarding the books for people that attended the training - yes - you're right - you should have received one.  We did send copies to everyone that ordered one at CiviCon London but we forgot to send them to training attendees - again, apologies for that. Katy will send you an email soon asking to to confirm your address, and we'll send one out to you.  We can also send you the 4 books for your client as well if you like.

Michael, hi

Many thanks for this.

I can confirm that the copies I got from lulu.com do not include sections on Campaign, Survey, Petition. I'll wait to hear from Katy.

It would be great to get the 4th edition out to my client so many thanks for your generous offer there. The lulu.com channel is important to maintain, and as you say it's really helpful to have everything clearly labelled with version numbers and publication dates.

Looking forward to making a contribution to this week's work on the book, albeit remotely.
