Contact import hangs up
December 11, 2011, 01:32:38 pm
When I import contact information from a csv file, the little white window showing the percentage will get to, say, 35% or 52%, then hangs.  I've waited 45 minutes and nothing changes.  I don't know whether it's the little window that is not getting updated or the database that's not getting updated, since a spot check seems to show that the data is there.

I tried importing the csv file as UTF-8, but that didn't help.  There are less than 300 records so this seems out of line.

Suggestions?

Thanks

Finally got back to this... I don't see any errors in the logs.

It looks like its just very slow.  Using a csv file with 500 records with only 10 columns, the message said it had done 200 of 500 after about 45 minutes and I got impatient and refreshed the page.  A couple of hours later, it looks like all the records have been processed.

I'm running XAMPP on a windows box.  Is there anything that can be done to speed this process up?

You can certainly attempt to optimize your XAMPP install. You can Google for various settings to do there--one thing that comes to mind is raise the memory limit for PHP. Beyond that, I don't think there is much that can be done as this is basically a feature of the CPU and RAM which are provided to CiviCRM. Meaning, if you want it a lot faster, consider using better hardware. :)
