After major upgrade 3.x to 4.x

After running a major upgrade to CiviCRM (Drupal) via the instructions posted I have a couple of glaring issues so far. While going to CiviCRM home the page begins to load and then stops after 1/2 of a minute - then fails showing a wsod.

I am able to create a new link on my Drupal 7 Admin menu for CiviCRM. Same result in trying to access that page (as it is "home") but I am able to go to other adresses within the CiviCRM portion of the website.

Where do i start trouble-shooting? I am able to see the source behind the wsod if this is of any value.

(additional information: Garland theme used, home page of site is not CiviCRM home page, followed instructions to the letter including not turning off module during process)
