Australian States (2)
December 19, 2011, 03:42:33 pm
Hi,

I requested of our CiviCRM managers (I'm just a user) that the states be changed to their 2 or 3 letter codes (SA, NSW) because the full name (South Australia, New South Wales) tends to push records on to two or three lines unnecessarily. It's also the norm in an address situation to simply refer to states by their codes. I notice on another Australian States post that CiviCRM uses ISO 3166-2 for its dropdown choices. In Wikipedia this standard has all the 2 and 3 letter codes preceded with "AU-", eg, AU-NSW which is alien to normal usage and perhaps why the managers used the full name option rather than the ISO codes (assuming they had the option of using the full name or the ISO code) - I really don't understand how the system works so I'm just guessing. Is there a way of being able to display states as their normal 2 or 3 letter codes? The database managers have simply said the full name is the way CiviCRM does it.

Regards,
Petra Liverani

Can you be more specific on what pages you are referring to. You can modify the address display preferences in a url similar to:

http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/setting/preferences/address?reset=1

check the help text which shows you how to use abbr instead of name

You'll might want to read the CiviBooks
