To 2 or not to 2 that is the question
February 06, 2008, 10:31:08 pm
I am working on several installs right now and all of them are for organizations that have no data to import and will be starting slowly. Does it make sense to start with Alpha 2 or start with the current release and move to 2 in the next few weeks when it goes live?

Thanks,
Steve

This is the current release schedule for CiviCRM v2.0
    * Code freeze: 01/07/2008
    * Alpha release: 01/24/2008
    * Beta release: 02/11/2008
    * Final release: 02/25/2008

Latest release is CiviCRM v2.0 alpha3.

But is it a pad idea to start with the Alpha just to get things going? Will I be able to make a direct upgrade?

thanks,
Steve

We try to avoid any schema changes once we release public tarballs. So it will be mostly updating code base, that is replace code with
the latest.

i'll contradict kurund a bit (to play the bad cop role). In general going into production with alpha is not recommended. However, i suspect we will release a beta candidate sometime next week, which means in all likelihood the schema will not change. Note that we do not provide upgrade scripts between various alpha/beta releases, so if the schema does change, u'll need to do some stuff manually (we'll obviously assist and help you with it on IRC / forums)
