100% succesful deliveries but emails not showing up in inboxes

Just as the title says we recently did a mailout to our membership using civimail.  CiviCRM (3.2.5) claims 100% successful delivery rate, but many (not all) of our members report not receiving the email.  At first I thought it could be a sender id thing but then for example some people on gmail got the email whilst others did not.  I myself should have received the email and did not (I've double-checked my spam folder), any idea how I go about finding out what the issue is?
