In Joomla, how do I give User ability to Merge Contacts?
January 07, 2012, 02:00:32 pm
I am the original SuperUser for our DB. I set up a few more SuperUsers so they could merge contacts also. However, I appear to be the only User who can merge contacts.

When I go into Joomla (1.7), I can't even edit those Users to change their status to add Administrator or anything else - I can only click on Close. It ignores all other attempts to save any changes.

Can any Joomla CiviCRM users help me?

If you're original SuperUser, you should be able to access the User Manager under the Users menu (Administration site) and assign them to a permissions group (e.g. Manager). Then from the CiviCRM Administer menu (Administer > Manage > Access Control) click the Joomla Access control link. This will give you a pop-up screen where you can assign permission for "CiviCRM: merge duplicate contacts" to their access group.

You can try this on the J1.6/1.7 public demo as well starting from http://j16.demo.civicrm.org/administrator/index.php with demo / demo login.

Thank you for showing me that - I had not yet found that!  HOWEVER, these people are SUPERUSERS, just like me, and yet they don't have the option to merge contacts when they click the contacts drop down box.

So I changed someone from SuperUser to Manager, and changed Manager settings through Administer CiviCRM, and gave the ability to merge contacts and use dedupe rules - but when I logged in, there still was no option to merge contacts on the Contacts drop down.

Any other ideas?

If these folks are members of the Joomla User Group which shows as having permission for 'merge duplicate contacts' - then not sure why they're not seeing the menu item. You could try running "menu rebuild" while one of them is logged in:

http://<your joomla site>/administrator/?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/menu/rebuild&reset=1

You could also try having them access the page directly and see if there's an access denied message:
http://<your joomla site>/administrator/?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/contact/deduperules&reset=1

You are MARVELOUS!  Rebuilding the menu worked! Thank you!
