Modifying already existing custom fields
January 10, 2012, 06:25:58 pm
Hi All,

I have inherited a set of custom fields from a previous administrator.

I would like to modify one of the sets of custom fields so that they are available to a wider selection of our members.

In the customize section, under [custom data] I selected 'settings' for a specific custom field group. I would like to change the 'Use for' option such that it is now available to any of our membership types. The problem is that for some reason the only option on this page that I cannot seem to modify is [USE FOR]. I have attached a picture below to illustrate my point.

If anyone could help me with this it would be much appreciated.

You can not change that aspect of the custom data, you will have to create a new set and de-activate the old one. That will probably mean you have to migrate data from the old custom data set to the new one, how are your MySQL/PHP skills?

In v4.1 there is a new UI option which allows moving fields from one set to another along with data - http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-9118, provided the USED FOR points to same entity, for example from Individual to Organization (but not from Memberships to Individual).
