RESOLVED : Contribution - Receipt email field FROM blank and mail won't send

Joomla 1.5.25 / civicCRM 3.4.8

I've created a Contribution linked to a Membership form. When I complete the frontend form, I get a warning on completion that sendmail failed.

I enabled email logging, and the email that civiCRM is generate is as follows:

I see that the FROM field is blank, and my mail server won't allow send if FROM is blank.

I have a valid email address in:

1. Joomla config
2. CiviCRM » Administer CiviCRM » Option Groups -> FROM Email Address
3. Membership Organization

As I wrote this posting, I found the problem so I post it here for others just in case it helps.

The problem was that in the Manage Contribution Pages, under Thank-you and Receipting -- you must specify Receipt From Email -- the field is flagged as mandatory, but you can create a Contribution without this value (mandatory not enforced). And if the field is blank, then FROM is blank in the resulting email, causing the frontend attempt to send the Receipt to fail with error.

My contribution thankyou has an email assigned to it, but it's still spitting out this error.

Code: [Select]
An error occurred when CiviCRM attempted to send an email (via SMTP). If you received this error after submitting on online contribution or event registration - the transaction was completed, but we were unable to send the email receipt.

The mail library returned the following error message:
mail() returned failure

This is probably related to a problem in your Outbound Email Settings (Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Outbound Email), OR the FROM email address specifically configured for your contribution page or event. Possible causes are:

Your Sendmail path is incorrect.
Your Sendmail argument is incorrect.
The FROM Email Address configured for this feature may not be a valid sender based on your email service provider rules.
Check this page for more information.

when I do test emails they come just fine.

Contribution - Receipt email field FROM blank and mail won't send

I know this has been closed for some time but I saw the issue that the lasted person posted did not get resolved and I find myself having the same issue.
The test mail works just fine i even checked the log and the from email is just fine. But when i register for an even the receipt email does not clear, and i can't seem to find anything!
if someone could help that would be great, thanks
