Free event but want to offer optional merchandise purchase

I am new to CiviCRM and have been figuring out how to use the event feature.  My problem is with an nonprofit event that is free to attend but we want to offer optional merchandise purchase.  When I say the event is free then no other fees are presented.  When I set it up in a priceset, it looks to be required.  Any place for guidance?  Thank you.

can you try putting in a $0 option - may not be what you are after but may be the start of a workaround - and then hide that option on the page?
