CiviMail

I have tried for several days to get CiviMail working, and I've got to say, this is the most difficult, time-consuming, complicated, unclear install I have ever encountered so far. I'll keep it at but I wonder whether CiviMail should even be prominently advertised with the other CiviCRM components given that most people will probably not be able to get it working  on their own.

I know that open source can only do what its users program it to do, so I'm not knocking it at all. I'm just saying it's next to useless without a hard-core unix technician until we can make it easier to install. Maybe someone will develop a script that will at least let one know what is missing and what needs to be installed in one's current setup?

I'm trying to install it locally on a Mac OS X Leopard box and have a working mail server and most of the parts already neatly in place, but so far I still can't get CiviMail to communicate with the server... If I get it working, then I'll probably think it was obvious in hindsight....

You might want to consider using CiviSMTP a paid service which makes using CiviMail much more reasonable. You can search for CiviSMTP on the forums to get more details

yes, we do agree that civimail is not an easy install. if you continue down the install path, we'd appreciate a contribution back that makes it easier to install for future users

I am stubborn and will continue until I get it working, and when I do, I will be sure to post some tips, perhaps even a tutorial if I can retrace my steps. I believe if we can develop clear, helpful tutorials for installation, then people will be super happy because no one wants to pay extra to send their email if they don't have to.

I can't speak to the Mac issues, I'm on a standard unix shared hosting environment.

The hosted service is worth considering and we may end up there, but like you, I like to know how things work (somewhat).  We are plugging along and have several users now sending out bulk mailings.

We just got the unsubscribeUrl and optOutUrl working thanks to lobo responses in the forums:

I would love to share experiences with others about the CiviMail process.  My next task is working something out on the bounces.

Agree with the sediment, for sure. :)

However, I, like Denver Dave, am on standard Linux hosting.  I just installed 2.0 Beta, set the SMTP server and entered the username and password, and sent out a couple of mailings today, only tests to a handful of people, but the outbound processing seems trivial to set up.

I did have a bit of a hassle with trying to get the Cron to run from a command like "php -q BLAH", but the wget form works, great, and I tried to explain in the Wiki what I found.  I expect to be checking out the DD's tips from Lobo regarding inbound processing momentarily.

I can't imagine the point of what you are trying to do, or why you are trying to do it, with Mac/Leopard, when it's so much easier to just go with the flow, get a decent Linux web hosting account for $10 a month, and get on with life.

Best of Luck,
Ken
