Front End Profile Updating CiviCRM

Hello there - I'm using civicrm 3.4.5 and joomla 1.5.25. I've made a contact profile using custom fields for volunteers to complete. Once a user has  submitted the contact profile,  I'd like them to be able to recall it and update/edit it. It seems this can be done in later versions of civicrm and joomla and it seems that this can be done in Drupal. Is there an extension or set of extensions I can add to joomla so that this can be done in the versions I'm using.

I hope that makes sense.

Any direction on this would be great.

This should be possible in joomla 1.6.x which has better permissioning integration wth civicrm

not sure about 1.5.x and if editing a profile is allowed IF the user is logged in
