Recommended configuration?
January 25, 2012, 08:21:34 am
Hi,

I've been struggling with a Win2008R2/Joomla 1.7/CiviCRM 4 setup and I am tempted to abandon it (for now, at least) and set up whatever is most likely to behave itself so that I can try and get things moving. It sounds as though CiviCRM is still easier to make work correctly with Drupal, so I'll use that.

Can anyone give me any recommendations for the ideal Operating System and version, Drupal version and CiviCRM version? I just want something that works.

Thank you..!

I can't say which particular distribution is ideal for any particular person or orgaization, but I certainly recommend Linux for your server and the latest stable versions of Drupal and CiviCRM, those being Drupal 7.10 and CiviCRM 4.0.8, as of this writing.

I use a LAMP server as well. I would go with CiviCRM Hosting for production unless you know how to harden php appropriately.  I run Ubuntu server with WebMin. Great guide if you want just google woodel and webmin it should be the first hit. Step-by-Step guide for deploying and LAMP servers are much more efficient then windows servers and I am a Windows guy.  Hope that helps. You can always send me a PM about this and if you need to see a server I can do a 5 min walkthrough of my dev server setup with GoToMeeting I host to help forum members out.  I was a noob at this myself a year ago and just now getting it all down and ready to make the move for two NPOs.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies! My instinct would be to go the same way, but I've been "encouraged" to run it on Windows.

I am now using the following: Windows 2008 R2, IIS 7 with Drupal 7, PHP 5.3 and MySQL 5.1.57-community. I set up Drupal manually, rather than using any of the automated installs because I just wanted the basic setup with no fluff. There was a bit of messing about with permissions, etc, but it wasn't too bad.

I'm sure that Joomla would have been OK, but it seems a lot easier to find help and examples of Drupal installs of CiviCRM, which is always helpful/reassuring.

It seems to all be working, so it is possible on Windows. It is much slower on the test server I'm using than it was on a much weedier Linux VM.
