Membership end date for lifetime members
January 29, 2012, 09:25:04 am
There is a contact with a lifetime membership. However, that person just called and cancelled. The staff tried to change the status to "cancelled" and record the cancel date.

The error they got is "The selected membership type has a lifetime duration. You can not specify an end date for lifetime memberships. Please clear the end date or select a different membership type"

Why is this restriction in place? Can I disable this check with no ill-effect?

If the membership type was defined as Lifetime my understanding is there is no membership end date therefore cannot be defined.  Usually Lifetime is used for honorary membership and not a paid deal. Is this not the case for you?

Perhaps a workaround would be to change the duration of lifetime membership from 1 lifetime to say 100 years or 1000 years so therefore you could use the end date for cancellations.

I'm in a similar situation. My organisation's CiviMember database is using a 'lifetime' membership for people with recurring monthly contributions. When there is a problem with their payments, or they ask to stop, I would like to leave their montly membership in place as a permanent record, but end it also on the date of their last payment.
But I can't because lifetime memberships can't end.

I am very tempted to change our 'recurring payment' membership type to 20 year duration instead of lifetime. Has anyone tried this 'trick' ? Anything I should know ?

Can't you do this via Status Override

In my version of CiviCRM (3.1.5) I can over-ride the status to 'Ended' but it does not allow me to assign an End Date to the Membership - that is still forbidden by the Lifetime membership.

We do a mailing and membership appeals and reporting based on End Dates and they don't find these expired Lifetimers with a blank End Date.

Good call Pete on the status override, always forget about that.

On the membership end date, that is not allowed still.  You could add a new search criteria to include records with this status and all the other records as well.  Does that help?
