Contact cache not being built

Been trying to get an activity report from a smart group on 4.1, but it comes back with no results. I'm assuming the report tries to use the smart group contact cache to run the search against, but this is empty and I can't see any way of getting it to manually populate. Bug, or me?

Nope, so it's clearly our set up. Are there instructions anywhere for debugging the cache set up? Can't find anything with Google.
