9001:Unknown System Error with Authorize.net

I'm trying to setup civicontribute using the Authorize.net payment processor.  When I submit the confirmation form, I get the following error:

Payment Processor Error message:
9001:Unknown System Error.

Hmmm.  Not very descriptive.  Any suggestions on where I should look to see what has gone wrong?

I don't have the CURL php extension installed, maybe that's the problem.
