Now that I better understand Civi, I realize some of the extraneous data confusion I have is due to multiple location types. This has led to storing email address and phone numbers inconsistently in main, work, other locations. Is there any utility to merge this data--for example, delete the "main" location and have all existing data move to "work" as default? Or is this purely a database cleanup task I should do directly in SQL?

sql is your friend in this case. Address has the restriction of one location type / address. the others can have multiple values per location type
