CiviCRM corrupted and now won't install
February 03, 2012, 09:13:03 am
Hi there,

Hope you will be able to help me.

I am running Joomla 1.5.23 and was running CiviCRM 3.x quite happily. All of a sudden today the admin.index page corrupted and showed no data. I attempted to uninstall the program but got error messages telling me it had not uninstalled properly.

Since then I have tried to install CiviCRM 4.0.3 and also 3.4.8 by using the standard install button and browsing to the file. After a lng period of it waiting to contact Joomla, it eventually goes back to the main control panel page with no mention that it has installed.

When I go back into Components, CiviCRM is not listed.

Could someone please help meget the old version completely removed so I can re-install it.

I have a back-up of the database - will I need to re-install all the data or will the new version pick up on the existing database?

Any help is greatly received!!!

Hershel

Do you know what changed? Something must have changed for the site to break. It sounds like you're saying that your CiviCRM home page doesn't work. You said it's "corrupted and showed no data" but is there any error?

Regarding your data, if you have a backup of the DB then your data isn't lost. But first I would suggest you reinstall the previous version and make sure it works. Then you could try to upgrade.

Hi there,

Thanks very much for your reply, it is really appreciated.

I got a call from my client who told me that CiviCRM had 'stopped working'. Naturally they claimed they didn't do or touch anything anf that it just stopped working by itself.

I checked the ftp files and it did not seem anyone had been tampering with the files.

Because it was unknown who had done what, I decided it would be easier to simply remove Civi and then just re-install it rather than try and takes a shot in the dark as to what caused it.

However, when I opted to 'uninstall' CiviCRM via the components option it attempted and failed to do this. As such  I was forced to go through every folder and remove the Civicrm folders. I am aware that this is not the perfect way forward but I felt I had little option under the circumstances.

I have tried to re-install an older version as well as a newer version of CiviCRM but as I say, it attempts to install it, and after a long period of waiting, it just takes me back to the control panel page and does not install the program. There is no error message or confirmation that it has been installed.

If you could please suggest my next best path as rgards to installation I would be really grateful. I the meantime I will attempt to resolve the issue and if I do, I will naturally post the answer on here for the benefits of others.

Many thanks  :)

Without examining the site, I'm afraid I can't say what's wrong nor how precisely to fix it. Hopefully someone else may have a suggestion.

Hi there,

I have managed to solve the problem.

I basically went through every folder and removed all instances of Civi. I then went into the tmp folder and emoved everything. I then re-began the install process and it was successful. All existing data is stll in there as well. I also took the opportunity to upgrade civi n the process.

 :D
