Automatic Membership from Contribution
February 04, 2012, 03:43:11 pm
Hi,

My organization automatically renews membership when a contribution is made (regardless of whether it is dues or another donation). As CiviMember works, I have to take the 2-3 steps of searching for a member to renew that member. Then, if they don't exist, I have to go to the new membership screen. For existing members, I cannot just go to the new membership screen because I end up with multiple parallel memberships for the same member -- and then querying for members returns a list with four of the same person, etc.

I want some way for CiviCRM to recognize that each contact can only have one membership at a time. And if they make a contribution, their membership is automatically renewed. Is there any way to do this?

From the standpoint of my organization, the best solution would be a way to set CiviCRM so that a single membership is automatically renewed when a contribution is entered for that member. Is this possible?

I'm new to CiviCRM too but I have purchased and read the Using CiviCRM book and I will give you an answer according to what I have read.

The new membership form should be used to create memberships for your contacts for the first time (although this can also be done from their contact record).

For existing members you should renew their membership via the Memberships tab in their contact record. If you want to register a payment tick the "Record Renewal Payment" box and provide the required details.

This will update the existing membership's expiry date accordingly and add the corresponding contribution as well.

Alternatively, you can set up a contribution page which can be used for membership signup/renewals. This is also the proposed way to handle this if you want your members to be able to renew their membership themselves.

I hope this helps.
