Linking Profile to Contribution Page?

What is Linking?

Documentation (http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Linking+Profiles) says:

Quote
CiviContribute - When you want to collect information from Contributors via online contribution pages, you can create a profile and link it to your contribution page.

Ok, so I have created a profile.  It has two custom data elements in it:  Occupation and Employer and has some intro text.

I want this to appear on a contribution form I have created.

I've been searching for this "linking" concept everywhere.  One note said:

Quote
Refer to your Drupal or Joomla documentation for information on creating links and menu items.

But I'm not seeing any place that says how to take a profile and stick it on a Contribution page.

I created another profile with email, first name, and last name, and that one shows up on the contribution page, but that's redundant and I don't need it.  I am not seeing why one profile shows up when I don't need it and another one I do need shows up.

I'm sure there's an obvious explanation for this, I wish the documentation would be updated so that you could link right to where in Drupal or Joomla, it shows you wnat linking means.

I'm in Drupal 5, CiviCRM 1.9.

Thanks mucho!

James

Most likely this is because your custom data is extending something of a different type. Can you ensure that your custom data is extending Contact.

If this is still an issue, You might want to reproduce this on our sandbox (http://sandbox.civicrm.org/) and we'll check and figure out whats happening

Thanks Lobo!

I setup the custom data as type Individual.  Was I supposed to use Contact for creating custom data fields?  Contact does not show up in the profile selection list, so I avoided that.

I notice that on my Profiles listing page, under "Used for" I can see different things:

For the one working:

View/Edit User Account, Profile, CiviContribute

For the one not working:

View/Edit User Account, Profile

So how did the CiviContribute show up there in the Used For column?

Also, how does one order the various pieces of information on a contribution page?    (That's a separate thread... but sortof related to my situation.)

Individual should also work fine. When you are setting up a contribution page, you can choose what Profile you want to collect information on that contribution page. Check the following pages on sandbox:

http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/contribute/manage?reset=1&action=update&id=1

Click Custom Page Elements to goto:

http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/contribute/manage?reset=1&action=update&id=1&subPage=Custom

You can choose a valid profile in the select boxes there. The system does not do a good job (as yet) of preventing you from choosing invalid profiles in all cases. Once a profile is selected in a contribution page, it automatically appears in the settings page for that profile

Lobo,

Thanks, I see it now...   "Custom Elements"...

I have skimmed over that every single time except the first before I had created any profiles or even knew what a profile was...

Suggestion:  Considering the only items in "Custom Elements" are additional profile items, I suggest renaming the section to:

"Included Profiles"

Or something like that.

Also I can see making this section allow the insertion of as many profiles as wanted by weight instead of just top and bottom.

Thanks again!

James

James - excellent suggestion on naming. I've modified this section title in 2.0 to be "Include Profiles". You can see it on the 2.0 demo:
