How can I customize how search results are displayed?

Sorry, I'm really new to CiviCRM ....

I need to set up some functionality so that it's very easy for people to use.  All I need, is to have contacts selected from the database based on some very simple criteria, and then have specific information on those individuals displayed on the screen, probably in an HTML table.  I would rather avoid PDF, right now my site is having trouble with the PDF library.

What's the easiest way for a newbie to do something like this?

If you are looking for simple search, I would recommend using profiles for this purpose. Profile allows you to configure search filters and also fields displayed in result.
