Switching from Drupal to Wordpress
February 08, 2012, 09:59:08 am
The installation I'm working on runs WP but may not be able to install 3.3.1 for a while yet.  Hence I'm thinking of running Civi under Drupal until WP is updated - could be months or longer   So, my question is - If I started with Drupal what would be involved in later switching the installation from Drupal to WP?

(I hope this is the right forum for this question!)

Hi Andy

I raised a similar question a short while ago. In my case I'm developing the CiviCRM installation under Drupal with the aim of moving it to Wordpress once we have a stable 4.1.

The response to my query was generally that it was thought that with the exception of data that linked CMS users to CiviCRM contacts - not an issue in my case - the database was portable. Therefore it should work the other way around as well.

If the database is portable, then no worries.  It would be nice to have that confirmed.

Indeed it would. In fact I was thinking it would be much simpler if there was only one version of CiviCRM available for download, rather than the three we have currently (one for Drupal, one for Joomla and one for WP, plus the l10n files, which I assume to be universal).

Is it necessary to have three different downloads? Just another point of complexity for new adopters that could potentially be removed.

And yes please, clarity of database portability between platforms.

The 3 CMS's have different install instructions and URLs to run the install and hence different directory structures. Download joomla and drupal and see the package differences. I dont think its a good use of anyone's time to try to "unify" the packaging mechanisms of the different CMS's (assuming its possible).

I think folks who want to do the switch should try it and clarify for the rest of the community. We typically dont switch CMS'es and hence cannot really confirm that it works (thought from a theorortical perspective, we do think it will work :)
