Contact photo doesn't appear

I uploaded a 180 x 200 pixel photo of a contact, but it doesn't appear in the summary page.   Fails also on the sandbox.  I checked the photo was uploaded (it was) into the correct directory as specified in system settings.

...or is there something I need to do to get the picture to appear?  This is in the 'Contact Details' screen.
