Nasty surprise with event reminders
February 11, 2012, 02:41:06 pm
I did a bad, bad thing.  I installed 4.1.b3 on my production server.  I very much wanted to use event reminders on our upcoming events and had hoped the stable release would be available in time.  But when it wasn't, I tested the beta as thoroughly as I could on a test server and then took the plunge.

I set up dummy events on my test server and tested event reminders and everything seemed to work just fine.  However, the test server did not have all the historical event data that exists on my production server.

When I set up an event reminder to thank people after attending an event, the system began sending the email to thousands of participants from prior events.  Not good.

Once I realized what was happening I acted as quickly as possible to stem the flow of emails.  First I set CIVICRM_MAIL_LOG to /dev/null in my civicrm.settings.php file and then I disabled outbound email in civicrm/admin/setting/smtp.  Unfortunately, these seem to only apply to new jobs as I could see the emails continuing to be sent on my smtp server.  Finally I changed my smtp password so civi could not authenticate, which stopped additional emails from going out.

ok.

First question: Where/how can I edit the database to prevent the rest of the email being sent when I re-enable smtp?

Second question: How does one create a new event reminder that doesn't apply to past events?

I know I screwed up, but I would really appreciate any help to get out of this mess I've made.

Thanks.

When I wrote the last post, I could see civi attempting to connect to the smtp server every 10 seconds or so.  I assumed it would continue to try to send the unsent messages until I manually cleared them.  Apparently however, it has worked through the backlog and I have been able to restore my mail settings without more unwanted messages going out.

I have deleted my event reminders and disabled the 'scheduled reminders' job.

So everything is ok again.

Still, a bit of unwanted excitement this afternoon.
