Alternatives to CiviSMTP
February 15, 2012, 12:16:53 pm
I used SenderScore.org to measure the overall quality of the CiviSMTP IP, and got a score of 89, including a 92% delivery rate.

Those numbers are not bad, but if I want to do better, what can be done?

Should I be looking at a higher-end solution than what CiviSMTP can provide?

In all these forums, I see no other SMTP servers mentioned besides CiviSMTP, but there must be other options!

Hi,  the score is actually at 91 now and will be improving going forward.  The reason it dropped is we just took on a couple of big clients that caused an uptick in our volume.  However, this did not have any real affect on current clients and their deliverability.  The score simply reflects that new clients are training their systems and getting bounced addresses weeded out

your alternatives could be to:

[1] use a different smtp server and process bounces manually or by using a catch all address (check the manual for how to do this)
[2] set up your own smtp server and return channel and manage all the deliverability yourself

over 100 non profits currently send mail through CiviSMTP and deliverability is never a complaint.  We constantly monitor blacklists and our logs and make all efforts to keep deliverability very high.

You will not find anything better than us.  :)

peace,

-Shane

There are no other providers of just SMTP service (AFAIK) but as shane noted, you can host your CiviCRM on any suitable web server and use the SMTP there. Most CiviCRM installs that I see do that.

I meant ones specializing in CiviMail. I am working today, in fact, with a hosting client of mine helping her setup a connection to a third party SMTP service for a fairly large list. Quite a bit of back and forth trying to get setup because the SMTP service is not familiar with CiviMail.
