Public vs. private... HELP, plz.

I am knew to this entire thing so please be patient with me. I am using CiviCRM 4.0.5.  with Drupal 7 and we have a database of users and a directory. It's currently set to be searchable which most of our users love. However, we have a few that would like to opt out. I can figure this out on drupal with a privacy module but this does me no good since all of our contacts are from civicrm in a custom database... PLEASE help, and PLEASE speak to me like you would a small child because I'm seeing double I've been looking at this screen for so long.

Sum up:
Need to give users the option to make their name and info not searchable to general public or to other members.

Let me get this right: so you can want to make sure some users are not shown in the search results? If that is the case, you might have a go with placing your allowed contacts in one group and the opted out in another one? Check http://book.civicrm.org/user/
