Contacts gone missing from Smart Group

I have a smart group that selects all the individuals that belong to a specific group and have a specific tag set. Been working find. However, today 2 of my lists have lost all the contacts except for ones added to CiviCRM in the last couple of days.

I'm goign through rebuilding all the Smart Groups at the moment, but this isn't ideal as the client may not notice and use the group to send out an imprtant email and miss some people

What's happened? and how do i stop it happenign again?

Panic over - but still some strange behaviour

OK - the problem was that the tag had been cleared so the members of the smart group were no longer members. However - If I rebuilt the group, some of the groups found the ex-members
