CiviCRM creating a very slow site / MySQL errors
February 17, 2012, 05:39:01 am
Hi everyone,

I'm hoping you can help me out with a problem that has come up over the last few days.  On Wednesday, I was sending out a mass email from civimail.  It turns out that the email was never sent (or was sent to only a few contacts) and kind of bogged down the whole site.  I went into civimail yesterday and I canceled the mailing from the Scheduled and Sent mailings page (it was still "running").  However, the site is now extremely slow -- as in, either taking many minutes to load or not loading at all (the homepage).  If I do manage the load the homepage and log into the site and access civicrm, the civicrm functions are all exceptionally slow and often produce this error 6 times in a row on a blank white page:

Code: [Select]
Warning: MySQL server has gone away query: INSERT INTO watchdog (uid, type, message, variables, severity, link, location, referer, hostname,
 timestamp) VALUES (1, 'php', '%message in %file on line %line.', 'a:4:{s:6:"%error";s:12:"user warning";s:8:"%message";s:167:"MySQL server
has gone awaynquery: SELECT src FROM url_alias WHERE dst = 'node' AND language IN('en', '')
ORDER BY language DESC, pid DESC";s:5:"%file";s:57:"[root]/html/drupal/includes/path.inc";s:5:"%line";i:80;}', 3, '', 'http://www.MYSITE.org/?
q=logout', 'http://www.MYSITE.org/', '24.185.193.21', 1329445343) in [root]/html/drupal/includes/database.mysqli.inc on line 128

I've contacted my hosting company, but to no avail.  Does anyone know what is happening here and how I might fix this issue?  The site was running fine as of Wednesday morning until I tried to send out that email.

Help!!

same here, looking for ways to fix it. super super slow today and i just got the error again after upgrading. I thought it was because of the outdated version of Drupal Core, but even after upgrading I get this error. I will keep researching, hopefully someone will jump on this thread and let us know what to do about it.

what hosting provider are you on? in general civicrm is a fairly heavyweight package and performance will not be very good on the "cheap hosting" sites out there, IMO

I would agree with lobo. If your site is slow, I would ask you host if they can see why. If they can't help you, I would consider finding another host who can help. Even just to run a trial period and see if switching to a different host fixes the problem.

My staff is having a hard time adjusting to Civi Due to the slowness of the package.  I am on a vps package with host gator level 4 which includes:
 CPU
1.98 GHZ
RAM
1344 MB

Should that be sufficient?

Yes, that hardware is sufficient, but many other factors can contribute to slowness on a server. As I said above, if your site is slow, I would ask you host why.
