Open Source Accounting

What are people out there using for open source web based accounting?

We are just getting started and want to pick out the best accounting package we can that is free/open source. We will not need ERP as far as I know. It seems that most OSS accounting packages out there are for businesses and not non-profits.

Hi,

What would be different between the accounting needs of a non-profit and a business? Seems to me the legal requirements are about the same, and accounting is accounting is accounting all the way.

What I am missing?

Not that much apparantly. I thought there would be some different terminology. But I still want to know the best free / OSS web based accounting app.

There are actually some fundamental differences.  I'm not a CPA but I've dealt with both business and non-profiy organization books.  The charts of.accounts are different and the concept of profit, net profit, etc.. doesn't exist in the non profit setting.  Also consider that expenses are sourced from specific pots/sources of funding.  Certain grants as restricted for.example.

I'm not familiar with web based software but gnucash presents an open source desktop based solution.  It has a.Linux version so maybe it could be integrated to the web?
